Usability and Human Interface Design Specialist - New York, NY



JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The individual will work with various business and engineering teams to:

 

    * Improve the usability, usefulness, and desirability of interactive web-based financial trading systems by applying their knowledge of a person's cognitive processes to the design of the interfaces, their function, how they are used, their colors and their look and their feel.

    * Conduct user interviews and requirements workshops to collect, document and communicate requirements using visualization techniques.

    * Assist marketing and sales efforts on part-time basis with creative design of web and email correspondence

 

Job Duties

 

This role will combine the disciplines of psychology and software product design to ensure delivery of products that give users the best possible experience with the product. The goal of applying their knowledge of cognitive processes is to simplify the user interface in order to increase usability which will ultimately increase the product's efficiency and effectiveness; as well as help prevent product interface misuse.

 

The Usability and Human Interface Design Specialist is a position within product management with the following responsibilities:

 

    * Set user interface design standards and policies for the user interfaces across the suite of products

    * Ensure the consistency of interface design standards use throughout the product suite

    * Conduct user needs assessment through task analysis and contextual inquiries

    * Understand and implement acceptable international design standards

    * Conduct usability testing

    * Work with graphics to rapidly develop prototypes to demonstrate new product design concepts

    * Implement a prototype review policy for internal and external constituencies

    * Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to continuously improve user experience

    * Monitor standards for, and ensure compliance with, section 508 and other accessibility standards

 

Requirements

 

Attributes and Skills

 

    * Understanding of financial software applications and the financial market in general

    * Understanding of user-centered design techniques and processes

    * Strong knowledge of graphic design tools such as Photoshop

    * Strong knowledge of interactive web interface techniques such as AJAX and web remoting

    * Working knowledge of web interface frameworks such as Velocity, Tapestry, Struts, GWT or Silverlight

    * Ability to analyze requirements and rapidly convert into prototypes

    * Solid research, technical and visual design skills

    * Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills

    * Ability to prioritize, multi-task and manage work to project timelines

    * Ability to work independently and as part of a team

 

Experience and Education

 

    * BA/BS in behavioral science or closely related discipline. Related fields include but are not limited to: Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Psychology, Interface Design, and Computer Science

    * Familiarity with current usability research, theories and methodologies; especially user-centered design processes

    * Experience in gaining active end-user involvement in the specification, design, and implementation phase
